Stara Planina is also known as "the Balkan". It is the biggest mountain in Bulgaria. It streches west to east through the hole country. Stara Planina covers an area of 25 000 sq. km. Due to its location the climate of the Balkan is influenced by the mild continental climate of Northern Bulgaria as well as the softer Mediterranean climate of the south. Stara Planina is a natural barrier against the strong northern winds. The mountain is devided into three parts - Westerna Stara Planina, Central Stara Planina and Eastern Stara Planina.
Western Stara Planina starts from the Vrushka Chuka Pass, situated on the western border of the country and ends at the Zlatishki Pass. It is the longest part of the mountain and the second highest as well with Midzhur peak (2168 m.). A lot of caves can be found in this region. ThàeIskar Gorge is situated here which is true nature phenomenon. There are 23 chalets in this part of the mountain and many hiking routes which is a great opportunity for the bulgarian and foreign hikers.
