The town of Svilengrad (55 m above sea-level) is situated on the banks of the Maritsa River, in the immediate proximity to the touching point of three state boundaries, namely Bulgarian-Greek, Bulgarian-Turkish and Greek-Turkish.
It is about 70 km south-east of Haskovo, 150 km from Plovdiv , and 300 km? from Sofia, 2 km north of the boundary with Greece, and 14 km north-west to the boundary with Turkey, 30 km and 265 km north-west of Odrin (Edirne) and Istanbul. Svilengrad is one of the gates to Bulgaria.
The town is founded on the ruins of a Thracian settlement. In the close vicinity the late-antiquity Bourdipta wayside station is built, through which the Roman road from Philippopolis (Plovdiv) to Adrianople (Odrin) passed.
The Ancient Bridge built in 1529 is the symbol of Svilengrad. It is an unigue outfit for its time.And in nowadays the Bridge aver Maritza River usth its twelve vault arches is one of the most remarkable monuments in southeastern Europe.It dates from the Ottoman rule.
The municipality has the exceptional prerequisite to be a boundary of Haskovo county and Bulgaria with two neighbouring countries ??“ Turkey and Greece. This defines its leading role in the future development of the European transport corridors, connecting Western and Central Europe with the Near and the Far East.
The tourism is a comparatively new sector in the economic complex of the municipality. Its accelerated development during the last years has led to a huge increase of the construction of new private hotels. About 40 private hotels have been constructed, mainly small ones.
The favourable natural and climatic conditions, the afforested areas, the water basins, as well as the presence of some departmental villas are prerequisites for a mountain, village and hunting tourism. The breeding of game for hunting fields is reasonably to be accomplished in special bases and farms.
